Design for Additive Manufacturing Considerations

Manufacturing should be considered from the earliest stages of the design process. This is especially true for advanced manufacturing technologies such as AM, where part cost is high, and the business case must be strong. These costs can be compounded by print failures arising from several factors such as material, printer, laser path/processes, etc.

  1. Leveraging common engineering best practices help to alleviate typical failure modes during the print process, such as deformation, distortion, cracking, delamination, etc. Some consideration to consider is no sharp changes in cross-sectional area as well as maintaining symmetry as possible.
  2. As a rule of thumb, using filleting, the current ratio of TPMS thickness to Baffle thickness we’ve found to yield successful builds and meet pressure requirements is 1.0: 1.5.
